What is welfare accommodation?
Welfare accommodation refers to portable or temporary units that provide essential facilities for workers on site such as toilets, washrooms, rest areas, canteens and offices.
What facilities are included in a welfare unit?
A typical welfare unit may include:
- Toilet(s) and handwashing facilities
- Canteen with seating and kitchenette
- Drying room for wet clothes and PPE
- Office or meeting space
- Power supply (mains or generator)
- Heating, lighting and water
Do I need welfare facilities on my site?
It is a legal requirement for employers to provide adequate welfare facilities at work, including on construction sites and other temporary workplaces.
This is set out in several laws and regulations including the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, Workplace Regulations 1992 and Construction Regulations 2015
Minimum welfare facilities typically include:
- Toilets and handwashing facilities with hot and cold (or warm) water
- Drinking water
- Facilities for rest and eating
- Facilities to change and dry clothes if necessary
On construction sites, these facilities must be available from the start of the project and kept clean and usable.
How many people can each unit accommodate?
It depends on the size and type of the unit. A standard mobile welfare unit may cater for 6–12 people, while larger cabins can serve 20+ staff. We can advise based on your workforce size.
Are the welfare units heated?
Yes, all welfare units come with heating and lighting to keep staff comfortable in all weather.
What site requirements are there for welfare accommodation?
You’ll need level, firm ground with sufficient space for delivery and siting. For mains-connected units, access to electricity, water, and drainage is needed. Let us know about any access issues beforehand.
